This letter to yourself is touching just as it is vulnerable and echoes what many of us feel about ourselves in one degree or another. Thank you for sharing, as well as inspiring me to write myself a long overdue little letter too:)

Re: Letter to a Girl

What a beautiful and touching letter you have written to yourself! I remember you when you were 15... I admit I was jealous of how beautiful and tall you were compared to the rest of us in high school. But what really illuminated that beauty was the kindness you spread to others. Even in times when you struggled to love yourself, you've always had a wonderful heart that illuminated the lives of others which you have touched, and that's what really matters in measure. That's what made you beautiful then and that's what makes you still beautiful today.

Re: My Little Pink Suitcase

I had a little blue & pink suitcase that I carried my dolls' clothes in. Yes, they went EVERYWHERE with me. Rosebud, Kissy, Luigino and Victoria went on vacations and I had to bed them down at night in the motel rooms or where ever we stayed. I still have all of those dolls. The only downside that I have found is that my lack of a ring and Grove's tendency to call me "Melissa" instead of Mommy makes people assume I must not be his mother. Or assume that Morgan and I are actually "living in sin." heh. Whatever.

Re: Tomboy Bride: The Ring’s the Thing…Or Is It?

Regarding the diamond industry indiscretions, I've heard that if you buy whole-sale, the diamonds typically come from a more respectable origin (that's what Kev did, but not for that reason - just more economical, as in 50% cheaper that way). There's also the option of white sapphire if you want that traditional diamond look & precious stone without the implications.

Also wanted to point out that in Europe, both men & women wear engagement rings. Which makes a lot of sense if BOTH of you are supposed to be committed to one another. When we were in Italy back in '05, the locals wanted to know where Kevin's ring was, and we had an informative conversation about each other's engagement-jewelry-giving traditions. (I just noticed that Kevin already pointed that out below). And speaking of ring-wearing in other countries, not everyone considers the left hand to be significant. In Russia, the blood line to the heart is believed to run through the right ring finger. Thus, they wear wedding bands on the right hand.

As far as buying used goes, well, I'm superstitions & believe that stones can carry bad ju-ju of the previous wearer. Personal objects like that have been known to take on an aura or imprint, and I just wouldn't want to go there with something so significant not knowing it's history. Of course, you can say the same thing, I guess, if it was mined by children in a corrupt industry. In that case, refer to paragraph (1).

I do think it's important (and sweet) to exchange tokens upon announcing intention to marry. However the couple chooses to do this is their business. But in order to retain significance of declaring "we're engaged" to the general American public, the diamond on the left hand is the symbol that people recognize.

Re: Tomboy Bride: The Ring’s the Thing…Or Is It?

we got one because J insisted. He wanted a chance to get something specifically for ME and I happen to like jewelry. We shopped for and found a sapphire ring, which is my birthstone. I actually wanted Tanzanite originally but J found out it was a soft gem that easily damaged so I went with my birthstone.

It wasn't easy because I have very slender fingers and small hands so I need a very tiny, delicate ring or else it looks gaudy on me. We finally found one that was perfect and I love it to this day. I take it off all the time for less-than-lovely jobs and definitely when cooking with dough or meat. My wedding ring part III has gotten too small since I had Lil Miss but the engagement ring has not. Because the wedding band is wider and harder to take off if my fingers are swollen

Re: Tomboy Bride: The Ring’s the Thing…Or Is It?

Hey that's cool! :)

Re: Tomboy Bride: The Ring’s the Thing…Or Is It?

Actually, when Brit and I went to Italy after we were engaged, everyone there found it very odd that I was not wearing an engagement ring...

Re: Tomboy Bride: Always the Words

I can't even think about the family and friends that will be gathered there, and those that will be missing, without getting a little misty (and excited!)

Re: Tomboy Bride: Always the Words

I agree. It's always the words. And it's also the people...the way the bride and groom look at each other, touch each other, how they are in the presence of one another...some couples have a magic together that others don't, it seems, and you can always see it on their wedding day.
